Chapter Six
Shelby moved around Jacob’s body, knowing it intimately now as the music washed over them. Christian had lifted his restriction, allowing Shelby to come back to the club. But the prince had also told him that he better not disobey again.
Shelby wasn’t crazy. When the prince gave an order, any sane person tended to listen. Which only made him question his sanity for going against the original vampire the first time. Shelby smiled when he saw Eli bringing him a glass of ice water. Jersey’s mate handed the cold glass to him before disappearing back through the crowd.
“Here,” Shelby said as he lifted the glass to Jacob.
“Thank you,” Jacob said as he took the glass and drank the water down in just a few gulps. Was that normal? He could see the beads of sweat lining Jacob’s dark brows and began to worry.
His gut told him this wasn’t right.
“We can rest,” Shelby said as he plucked the glass from Jacob’s hand.
His mate shook his head, a grin lighting up his face. “I’m fine.”
Shelby was getting really tired of those two words. All vampires knew that taking care of their mate was top priority. They didn’t get another. It was crazy to abuse one’s mate, but Shelby had seen it happen before. Who would want to spend eternity cowering at someone’s feet? And who would want to spend eternity making someone cower? It was useless energy in Shelby’s opinion.
“You have to rest, mate.”
“I said I’m fine,” Jacob said as a red flush crept up into his neck. The man was angry. Shelby knew Jacob didn’t want to be coddled, but his health was at stake here and he wasn’t taking any chances. The man would just have to be spitting mad. Deciding that arguing his point wasn’t going to get him far, Shelby threaded through the crowd toward the bar.
If Jacob continued to dance without Shelby, he would drag his mate away from the dancing humans and vampires. Shelby sat the glass on the counter and turned to see Jacob emerging from the wall of dancers. He was softly frowning as he headed toward Shelby.
Shelby took a step forward. Jacob wasn’t frowning because he was mad. No, he was frowning because something was wrong. Even with the entire club filled with people, he could feel Jacob’s fear. It grabbed at him like a slick, black ooze with painfully sharp claws.
He raced toward his mate as Jacob paled and then swooned. Shelby caught the tall, muscular man and pulled him along until he reached the prince’s office and then kicked the door open.
The prince immediately stood. Shelby glimpsed at the men sitting around the table, but he quickly ignored them as he sat his mate on the couch. Jacob closed his eyes and slumped back into the leather.
“He’s dying!” Shelby cried as he ran to the prince. “Save him, convert him, please.”
Christian walked over to Jacob and squatted in front of the man, his dark eyes studying Shelby’s mate. “He is growing weaker, young one.
